Advertising Blimps: A Quick Summary
Perhaps one could say that advertising blimps do not capture the public imagination in the same way that say, a fighter jet or a racecar does, however there is no question that they remain one of the most exciting vehicles ever created. Few would argue that the world would not be a much sadder place without giant balloons flying around filming races.
Who could forget the classic scene in the seminal movie Scarface when Tony Montana, a vicious Cuban gangster portrayed by Al Pacino in arguably his finest role gazes out over the Miami skyline. His rapid rise to dominance of the city’s drugs trade has given him a massive mansion and as he stands their, dwarfed by his own wealth, the blimp flashes the motto ‘the world is yours’ and for him, for a brief moment, it is.
Many people or organizations may consider a miniature advertising balloon for their business, they do not have to be the insanely big airships from motor racing and so on, the balloon like advertisement device comes in all kinds of sizes and caters to all budgets although obviously the bigger they are the more people will see and be impressed by your advertisements.
The first time that advertising was used on airships was on the famous barrage balloons that floated over Europe’s major cities during the second great European war. Although their purpose was defensive, inventive business owners would attach advertisements to the side to show their latest offers and bargains. After that, there was no going back.
Before the war blimps were a popular way to travel for the upper classes of Europe and America, often running as airborne cruise ships they allowed the rich to literally look down on those less fortunate than themselves while enjoying overpriced food served by resentful workers who would have to work a month to afford even a coffee on board.
Of course, the most famous example of a blimp being on the news is not a good one but the Hindenburg disaster that killed thousands when an airship suffered from engine failure and crashed into a field full of people before exploding and killing them and the people on board shocking the world and becoming one of the first news images to become famous.
Although much of the mainstream media would have you believe otherwise, advertising blimps are an incredibly positive thing. Although of course their life has not been a fairytale, they are here to stay and will inherit the earth which they are in fact borrowing from their own children, and so the great cycle of life continues it’s journey.
